يتمتع كتاب المؤرخ الروسي “نيكولاي ايليتش بروشين”، “تاريخ ليبيا في العصر الحديث منتصف القرن السادس عشر-مطلع القرن العشرين” بأهمية وطرافة في الدراسات المعاصرة لتاريخنا الحديث وفيه يتوقف المؤلف وقفة سريعة عند منتصف القرن السادس عشر ليصوّر دخول العثمانيين إلى طرابلس الغرب وطبيعة حكمهم لتلك المنطقة خلال مرحلة زمنية طويلة. وينتقل بعد ذلك للمرحلة الأهم بالنسبة لكتابه وهي مرحلة ضعف المركز العثماني وتفسّخه (بعد أن ضيعت الدولة فرصة الثورة الصناعية) ثم تطلع الأطراف إلى الاستقلال عن الدولة العثمانية والتصدي للقوات الاستعمارية الأوروبية الوليدة التي كانت قد أكملت استعداداتها الاقتصادية والعسكرية البحرية وبدأت غاراتها على المناطق العربية ومنها الشمال الإفريقى بشكل خاص.
