يزعم بعض من لا يعلمون حقيقة جهاد الشعب الليبي عن وطنه وحريته أن استقلال ليبيا كان منحة من هيئة الأمم المتحدة. ومعنى هذا أن الشعب الليبي لم يقدم من التضحية ما يستحق به الاستقلال، إلا أن الشعب الليبي جاهد وضحّى، حيث ظلّ حوالى الثلاثمائة سنة في صراع مرير مع الترك للتخلص من ظلمهم واستبدادهم، وفساد حكمهم. فقد ثار عليهم الليبيون أكثر من ثلاثين مرة في فترات من الزمن متتابعة، قام بها رؤساء القبائل في كل من طرابلس وبرقة، وما كان السكوت عن الثورة في بعض الأحيان إلا انتظاراً للفرص والظروف المؤاتية.
