في أوائل عهد الصحابة كانوا يكتبون الحديث بجوار القرآن في صفحة واحدة، فخشي رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم من اختلاط السنة بالقرآن، فنهى عن كتابة الحديث، وقال: “لا تكتبوا عني غير القرآن ومن كتب عني غير القرآن فليمحه”. فلما استقر القرآن في الصدور، وكتب في السطور، وأمن صلى الله عليه وسلم اختلاط الحديث به أذن بكتابة الحديث، فكان لعبد الله بن عمرو رضوان الله عنهما صحيفة، وكان لعلي رضي الله عنه صحيفة، وأمر صلى الله عليه وسلم أصحابه أن يكتبوا حديثاً لأبي شاه.
